Upcoming Learning Opportunity!

I could not recommend this training more!!! It falls in line with Dr. Gabor Mate’s message that people are behaving normal in a not so normal world! Would you not agree that if every person got their basic needs met they would show up with the ability to more effectively communicate what they need???

If you need Ethics CEUs – Oh my goodness, Thank you to Rainier Springs for providing this valuable life affirming training – for free!!! SQUEAL!!!

Harm Reduction Explored: Making Unsafe Behavior Safer in the Clinical Setting

Presented by Kevin Dirksen, M.Div., M.Sc., HEC-C

Providence Center for Health Care Ethics Participants in this training will explore the care of patients whose behaviors, both health-related and otherwise, present significant challenges for providing clinical benefit and even maintaining a therapeutic relationship. There is a correlation between certain patient population and terms like “non-compliant,” “non-adherent,” “difficult,” and “challenging” which are sometimes used in team discussion and the medical record. The session will be spent understanding harm reduction: what it is, why it may – and sometimes indeed should – be utilized as a framework for caring for certain patients, and how to think about incorporating it into direct patient care. This conversation will emphasize the ways in which harm reduction is consistent with the application of key principles in health care ethics like respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence (i.e., do not harm), beneficence, clinical integrity, and professionalism. How to balance these principles and arrive at a care plan that can be ethically justified will be a major focus of the session.
